“All the world’s a stage,
And all the men and women merely players;
They have their exits and their entrances…”
– William Shakespeare, As You Like It, Act II Scene 7
Exits & Entrances is a new independent online theatre magazine. We’re particularly passionate about independent and fringe theatre: the remarkable work happening in small venues, unexpected spaces, and places where imagination often has to stretch considerably further than the budget. These stories deserve attention in their own right, not simply as stepping stones towards bigger stages.
Theatre is full of extraordinary things. Not just what happens onstage, but everything that makes those moments possible: the first spark of an idea, the conversations in rehearsal rooms, the ingenuity required to create something from almost nothing, and the countless decisions, discoveries and occasional disasters along the way. We’re interested in all of it.
We’ll be talking to writers, directors, actors, designers, producers, choreographers, vocal coaches and the myriad other people who, together, bring theatre to life. We’ll be sharing interviews, reviews, essays, behind-the-scenes stories and practical resources – exploring not only what people create, but how they create it.
We’ll also be asking questions – so many questions! – and finding answers. How do you turn an idea into a production? Where do you begin if you don’t know anyone in the industry and don’t have the money for an MA or a course? How do you find collaborators, audiences or opportunities? What happens when things don’t go according to plan?
We believe that those conversations, that knowledge, should be open to everyone – and we want to do our bit to make that happen.
Exits & Entrances is for people who make theatre. For people who want to. And for people who simply love it and want to know a little more about what happens before the curtain rises – or after it falls.
There’s a whole world of theatre beyond the stage, waiting to be discovered. The stories, the magic, the people who make it all happen. Come and explore it with us!
